CARRIAGE DRIVING

Season - All Year
Location - North East Scotland

Riding in a horse drawn carriage is a unique way of exploring the countryside, allowing you to get closer to nature and appreciate the landscape and wildlife around you. It's also a great opportunity to try out a new sport and learn all about the art of horse and driver working together as a team. Based in Royal Deeside the horses/ponies and coachmen at the driving centre are very experienced and presented to an exceptionally high standard, having competed at national level events and even starred in several films in the UK. We can offer guests a variety of carriage driving outings, but tailored packages for birthday, corporate and wedding parties can also be arranged on request.

1. Riverside Carriage Drive
Explore the banks of the famous River Dee, driven by a pair of horses and their coachman. Before setting off you will see the horses being harnessed up and before you know it you will be meandering through grassy tracks and along the banks of the river Dee, viewing the animals and bird life and observing modern farming practices. You will visit the ruins of an ancient chapel, dating from 1225, where the Knight's Templars worshipped - an order of Knights who protected pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land during the Great Crusades. You will also pass by the legendary 'Thunderbolt Hole' where one of the Grand Masters of the Knight's Templars met his fate! Maybe you will be lucky enough to see the shadowy figure of the `green lady` who is said to roam the valley!

Upon your return, there will be the chance to hold the reins for yourself. This is a photo opportunity not to be missed!  Alternatively, we can drop you off at the local hotel for a light bite or dinner. Set on the banks of the Dee, the hotel provides the perfect blend of hospitality, cuisine and setting to end your memorable day in Deeside.

(Duration: 1-2 hour. Group Size: 2-8)

2. A Picnic in Deeside…with a Difference!
Driven in a 'Wagonette' or 'Omnibus' carriage, pulled by two lovely bay horses, we will head out into the countryside in search of the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch. It won’t be long before we head off-road along forest tracks, passing historic sites, scenic views and spotting wildlife such as roe deer. When we reach our destination, a picnic of local fare will be laid out before you. Sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning view over the Dee Valley with a glass of bubbly or fine wine. This is the original picnic outing!
(Duration: Approx 3 hours. Group Size: 4-8)

3. Tuition
If you have ever fancied taking over the reins yourself and learning more about the finer art of carriage driving, this is your chance. The driving centre is the only British Driving Society Approved Test Center for all levels in Scotland, so you can be assured you are in expert hands. Tuition is available for complete beginners to novices and those with more experience, or even those with their own carriage horse and would like to advance the skills of both horse and driver.
(Duration: Per hour, 1/2 day or full day. Group Size: 1-8)

4. Accommodation
A charming self-contained flat within the farmhouse is available for guests and which boasts idyllic views across the farm and river Dee, providing a great location for a weekend break in the Scottish countryside. Guests are welcome to create their own combination of carriage driving, overnight accommodation at the farmhouse and other activities offered by Country Ways Sportings.
