THE MACNAB CHALLENGE

Seasons
- September
Venue - Scotland

Today’s much heralded “Macnab” challenge, namely to bag a red deer, shoot a brace of grouse and catch a salmon, all within one day, is derived from the famous novel by John Buchan and published in 1925 under the title John Macnab.

Buchan's adventure story was centred on three members of London’s upper-class society- an ex-attorney general, a banker and a cabinet Minister. Bored, with little to engage them and keen for a rejuvenating challenge, they concocted, in the rarefied atmosphere of their London club, the notion of poaching deer and salmon on three Scottish estates, having warned the owners of their intentions and the dates when the acts were to be carried out. Grouse please note, did not figure in the challenge. In the event of success £50 would be paid to a charity appointed by the estate owner, but failure would be a forfeit of £100, again paid by the three “poachers,” all of whom operated under the nom-de-guerre, John Macnab. It is a truly thrilling adventure story and a must-read for every true sportsman.

Guests who are keen to try their luck at completing a MacNab start the day at the crack of dawn to try and catch a salmon – the hardest part! – followed by an outing into the heather moorland to stalk a red stag and shoot a brace of grouse. Guests will be accompanied by an estate gamekeeper at all times, for guidance and advice, and to help you attempt the ultimate sporting challenge! Guests who complete a MacNab will also receive a certificate from Country Ways Sportings as a lasting memory of their unique experience.
