RED GROUSE SHOOTING

Season -
12th August - end of September
Location - Scotland

The glorious 12th, the opening of the grouse season in Scotland,  is synonymous with the finest of British sporting tradition. Set against the backdrop of some of the most stunning and rugged scenery in the British Isles, it is considered to be the pinnacle of driven shooting and offers the Sportsman an unforgettable experience.

Unique to the British Isles, red grouse are a wild species found only on heather moorland in Scotland and Northern England. Great care and effort is placed on the management of this habitat to sustain populations for future seasons – a continuous cycle of burning heather to regenerate young shoots on which the birds feed, counting young coveys (flocks) in the Summer to predict the season’s numbers and managing the shooting season from August until September.

We can arrange "walked-up" shooting over German Pointers, were a professional dog handler works a team of dogs over the heather until they scent a covey of birds, point and then 'flush' the game at the command of their handler. This is another traditional method of hunting on the hill and can provide guns and their guests, particularly those who have not seen pointers working before, with a unique and entertaining day out.  Visit our 'Photo Gallery' (top menu) to view some of the photos from last years grouse shooting over pointers.

Celebrate your day on the hill with a luxury Highland Picnic and a glass of champagne, then round off the evening with a gourmet Scottish dinner, a tutored whisky tasting and over night accommodation in one of our recommended hotels - the perfect end to the perfect day!

Please note that grouse numbers can also be very unpredictable due to 5 yearly population cycles, poor weather and pests such as heather beetle destroying their habitat – none of which can be controlled.  Be warned that cancellations are often the name of the game but then the end result, when it does come around, is so special that it is without doubt worth the wait.
